Gemini Gems now have an end date. Google will begin automatically converting Gems on personal Google accounts into skills on Nov. 17, 2026, according to an in-app notice.
Google has since confirmed that skills themselves do not require a paid Google AI subscription, but the replacement is not identical. Skills are still rolling out to personal accounts, require Keep Activity, and currently lack several Gem tools, leaving some workflows worth checking before migration.
Skills move Gems into regular Gemini chats
Google’s transition documentation says Gems will disappear from personal accounts in November 2026, with Google converting existing Gems to skills automatically. The exact Nov. 17 start date comes from the Gemini app notice reported by 9to5Google, which said users can continue using Gems until each one migrates.
Skills preserve the idea of reusable instructions but work directly across Gemini chats. Google’s skills documentation says users can invoke them with “/,” Gemini can apply an enabled skill automatically when relevant, and multiple skills can be combined for one task. Google is separately replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on eligible Android devices.
Supported Gem knowledge files will move automatically, but GitHub files are not currently supported. Canvas, Deep Research, Guided Learning, Create video, and Create music also do not yet work with skills. Google says skill sharing, Google Drive files, and Gemini Notebook support are coming in the next few weeks.
Personal accounts move first in November 2026. Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts are scheduled for March 2027, followed by education accounts in June 2027. Google is also testing a CC AI agent for shared calendars and tasks on personal accounts, another example of Gemini taking on longer-running workflows.
Age, activity, and tool support change
Age eligibility is one potential snag. Google’s Gems documentation allows personal-account users age 13 or the applicable minimum age in their country to create and use Gems, while skills require users to be at least 18. Google’s transition guidance does not explain what happens to existing Gems owned by users between those thresholds.
Skills also require Keep Activity to be turned on. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says future chats are not used to train its AI models when Keep Activity is off unless a user sends feedback. Users who intentionally disabled the setting should review that trade-off before enabling skills.
Google is separately developing persistent AI memory designed to keep stored context unreadable to Google, although the company has not announced when that capability will become generally available.
Anyone who depends on uploaded files, default tools, or shared Gems should check those workflows before migration. Google has confirmed that supported files will move and that skill sharing is coming, but its current documentation does not guarantee that existing Gem sharing links will continue working unchanged.
A paid Google AI plan is not required for skills in Gemini chats. Gemini Spark, tasks, and schedules still require a qualifying subscription.
Google is handling the conversion itself, but existing workflows may not behave identically after the switch. Gems that depend on uploaded files, sharing, or unsupported tools are the ones worth testing before Nov. 17.
