Apple’s first foldable iPhone can turn from a compact phone into something much closer to a small tablet. At $1,999, however, the iPhone Duo costs enough to make carrying an iPhone 18 Pro and iPad mini a serious alternative.
Apple unveiled the Duo on Sept. 9, with preorders opening Oct. 16 and availability beginning Oct. 23. Its 7.6-inch folding display and Split View multitasking raise a practical question for professionals and IT teams that use both an iPhone and iPad mini: Can one foldable replace both?
The Duo occupies an unusual spot in Apple’s 2026 hardware lineup: a phone designed to take over some of the work normally handled by a small tablet. That could eliminate a second device for some users, but the iPad mini still has advantages in screen size, software, and stylus support.
What the iPhone Duo can replace
The Duo uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip, but its biggest difference is screen space. The iPhone Duo announcement says its 5.4-inch outer display opens into a 7.6-inch OLED panel with ProMotion, Always-On functionality, and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness.
Split View can run two apps side by side, open two windows of the same app, and save app pairs. Netflix, Zoom, and Slack already use the folding interface, although organizations should test business-critical apps before treating the Duo as a tablet replacement.
Compared with the two-device setup, the Duo gives up some of the iPhone 18 Pro’s camera flexibility. The iPhone 18 Pro adds variable aperture and Pro camera controls, while its broader camera and performance upgrades strengthen the case for keeping the Pro alongside an iPad mini for photography- and video-heavy workflows.
The Duo also stops short of replacing the tablet half of that setup. Apple’s iPad mini specifications list an 8.3-inch display and support for both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). The Duo’s inner display measures 7.6 inches, and its Apple Pencil support will arrive after launch, with compatibility limited to Apple Pencil (USB-C).
The trade-offs become clearer when the two setups are compared side by side.

Does one Duo cost less?
Not necessarily. The Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, while the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199. Apple’s current iPad mini pricing starts at $599 for a 128GB Wi-Fi model.
An iPhone 18 Pro plus that iPad mini costs $1,798, or $201 less than the Duo. Choosing a 256GB Wi-Fi mini raises the total to $1,898, still $101 less. Cellular iPad configurations can narrow or reverse that difference.
The Duo is eSIM-only, so managed deployments should verify carrier provisioning, MDM enrollment, and line-of-business app behavior before wider rollout.
The Duo makes the strongest case for users whose iPad mini mainly handles browsing, messaging, video calls, and light multitasking. Those who rely on Apple Pencil Pro, tablet-specific workflows, or the iPhone 18 Pro’s more capable camera system still gain more from the two-device setup. The Duo reduces what they have to carry, but not necessarily what they have to spend.
