Apple Pencil is finally crossing from iPad to iPhone, but early iPhone Duo buyers will have to wait. Apple confirmed Sept. 9 that its new foldable will support the Apple Pencil (USB-C), with the feature arriving later in 2026.
The iPhone Duo goes on sale Oct. 23 after preorders open Oct. 16. Apple says Pencil input will work on both the 5.4-inch outer display and 7.6-inch inner display, bringing stylus-based notes and document annotation to an iPhone for the first time.
Apple Pencil support arrives after launch
In its Sept. 9 iPhone Duo announcement, Apple confirms Pencil support across both screens for writing, drawing, and document annotation. The Duo debuted as part of Apple’s 2026 hardware lineup, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and new Apple Watch and AirPods models.
Apple has given no more precise timing than “later this year.” The Duo will ship with iOS 27.1, but Apple has not identified the release that will activate Pencil support. The June iOS 27 beta had already surfaced fold-state and multiple-display references that pointed toward a foldable iPhone.
The announcement also does not identify which third-party apps will support Pencil-specific workflows on the Duo. Organizations considering the phone for annotation or document review should wait for the feature to launch and test their business apps before building deployments around it.
Only the USB-C Pencil is compatible
Apple’s current iPhone Duo specifications list only Apple Pencil (USB-C) support. Apple Pencil Pro compatibility does not currently include the Duo, so organizations with Pro models deployed alongside iPads should not assume those accessories will carry over.
The $79 Apple Pencil USB-C model provides pixel-level precision, low latency, and tilt sensitivity. It lacks pressure sensitivity, squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback, double-tap, and Find My — features available on the higher-end Pencil Pro.
Charging and pairing also differ. The USB-C Pencil pairs and charges through a USB-C cable and can attach magnetically to compatible iPads for storage, while the $129 Apple Pencil Pro pairs and charges magnetically on supported iPads.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, with 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations also available. Its launch follows months of reports that foldable iPhone production was ramping up ahead of Apple’s September unveiling.
Apple Pencil support gives the Duo a capability no previous iPhone has offered, but the hardware will arrive before that feature does. Organizations that need stylus input should wait for Apple’s release documentation and app-level testing before treating the Duo as a replacement for existing Pencil-equipped workflows.
