OnePlus may be cutting the OnePlus 16’s optical zoom on paper while giving the camera behind it a substantial hardware upgrade.
Reliable Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station says the upcoming flagship’s “final” camera configuration includes a 200MP main camera, a 50MP 3x periscope telephoto, a new 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP autofocus selfie camera. The telephoto would drop from the OnePlus 15’s 3.5x optical zoom but reportedly use a considerably larger sensor.
If the leak is accurate, OnePlus appears to be betting that better light capture and image quality at a more commonly used focal length will matter more than another half-step of optical reach.
What else is brewing
Beyond the glass, the rumor mill points to a complete internal refresh. TechRepublic’s Kezia Jungco cites whispers of a roughly 9,000mAh battery—a roughly 23% jump from the OnePlus 15’s pack—alongside Qualcomm’s unannounced Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chip and a high-refresh 185Hz BOE display.
Notably, TechRepublic previously reported that OnePlus China president Li Jie confirmed the refresh rate, adding a rare layer of official weight to the chatter.
The strategy behind the zoom shift
Dropping from the 3.5x reach of the previous model down to 3x might read as a downgrade on paper, but the physics tell a different story.
By fitting a substantially larger 1/1.95-inch Sony sensor behind that 3x lens, OnePlus is prioritizing light-gathering capability over sheer optical distance. For the average user, 3x is the sweet spot for portraits and everyday framing.
The massive sensor area means the phone will capture dramatically cleaner, more detailed images in dim settings than the OnePlus 15’s smaller 1/2.76-inch telephoto could manage. Android Authority notes this periscope sensor mirrors the OnePlus 13’s, which was praised for its zoom quality.
If the image processing holds up, the 16’s 3x shots could outperform the 15’s 3.5x shots in every scenario except high-noon daylight. It is a strategic bet on winning the usable zoom battle rather than chasing a spec-sheet number.

The catch: Price and global availability
However, two major hurdles loom. First, pricing. The ongoing component cost pressures and a RAM shortage could push the converted starting price of roughly $815 significantly higher, potentially eroding the phone’s value proposition.
Second, and more critically, the device might not even leave China. Notebookcheck highlights that the PYB110 model has only received SRRC certification domestically. Coupled with a lack of international FCC filings, the OnePlus 16 could remain a China-exclusive affair.
For now, both the camera configuration and international availability remain unconfirmed. The leaked hardware makes the OnePlus 16 look increasingly ambitious, but buyers outside China should wait for OnePlus to confirm regional models, pricing and launch plans before treating it as an upgrade option.
