What is Android?
Android is an open-source mobile operating system led by Google and built on the Linux kernel. The open-source foundation, known as the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), provides the underlying software that manufacturers can adapt for phones, tablets, foldables, TVs, cars, watches, and other devices.
Google maintains extensive documentation for the Android Open Source Project that explains the platform’s architecture and development model.
But Android on a Pixel phone is not identical to Android on a Samsung Galaxy device. Manufacturers generally build their own software experiences on top of Android. Samsung uses One UI, while other companies add their own interfaces, apps, camera software, AI tools, settings, and device-specific features.

What is the latest version of Android?
Android 17 is Google’s current major Android release in 2026.
Google released Android 17 on June 16, 2026, making it available on most supported Pixel devices and releasing its source code through AOSP. Other eligible Android devices receive the release according to schedules set by their manufacturers.

How Android updates work
Android updates are more complicated than iPhone updates because several organizations can be involved before new software reaches a device.
Google develops the base Android platform. Device manufacturers integrate it with their hardware and software, while chipset support can affect whether older devices can run newer releases. Mobile carriers can also be involved in testing and distribution for some devices.

Android OS updates vs. security updates
An Android operating-system upgrade and an Android security update are not the same thing.
An OS upgrade moves a device from one major version of Android to another, such as Android 16 to Android 17. These releases can introduce new APIs, interface changes, privacy controls, security protections, and system features.
Security updates are narrower. They address vulnerabilities without necessarily changing the phone’s major Android version.

What is sideloading on Android?
Sideloading generally means installing an Android application from outside the device’s usual app marketplace, often through an APK file.
Android has historically offered considerable flexibility for installing software from sources other than Google Play.
That flexibility can be useful for developers, businesses, testers, and advanced users, but it also introduces additional security considerations because software installed from unfamiliar sources may not receive the same vetting as apps distributed through established stores.
Google has gradually added more safeguards around sideloading while maintaining Android’s ability to install software from outside Google Play. What is an APK?
APK is the package format used to distribute and install Android applications. Downloading an APK can allow a user to install an app manually rather than obtaining it directly through Google Play.
Google Play also uses Android App Bundles. Developers can upload an App Bundle containing an application’s compiled code and resources, and Google Play generates optimized APKs for individual device configurations.
