Google Assistant, Google’s original voice helper, is about to become the latest name added to the company’s long list of retired products.
The tech giant is starting the final phase of its Google Assistant retirement on Sept. 4, 2026, moving Android users to Gemini as the company’s default AI assistant experience. The company informed existing Assistant users through email that “Google Assistant on your mobile device is being discontinued” and that “Gemini—our next-generation AI-powered assistant—is now the assistant experience on Android.”
Google said the removal process may take several weeks to reach all users. Once the transition reaches a device, users will no longer be able to use Google Assistant or switch back to it on their phones, tablets, or connected devices, according to the company’s notice.
The change affects Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, compatible headphones and earbuds, and vehicles using Android Auto through a phone connection. Cars with Google built-in, which run Android Automotive, will continue supporting Google Assistant beyond the September deadline.
Gemini becomes the only option for eligible Android users
The move completes Google’s shift away from its original voice assistant, which launched in 2016 as the company’s answer to Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.
Google had originally planned to replace Assistant in 2025 but delayed the transition into 2026 as Gemini continued to mature. During the migration period, users could still switch back to Assistant when Gemini struggled with certain tasks. That safety net will disappear after the shutdown reaches their devices.
Google’s transition applies to Android devices that meet Gemini’s minimum requirements and are located in regions where Gemini is available. Users who already have access to Gemini can continue using it, while those who want to move early can download the Gemini app from the Play Store.

What Android users should do before September
Most users will not need to manually switch. Gemini will take over automatically when Assistant access is removed.
Still, people who depend on voice commands should test their most important routines before the transition. Smart-home controls, reminders, navigation requests, and device shortcuts are worth checking to ensure Gemini handles them as expected.
For businesses managing Android devices, the change could require additional testing. Organizations using Android work environments may also need to review Gemini availability and access controls before employees lose the older assistant experience.
Google’s decision reflects a wider industry move toward generative AI assistants. Amazon is rebuilding Alexa around AI, while Apple is working to bring more advanced AI capabilities to Siri.
