Google’s October Android updates combine routine system changes with more important security and reliability fixes for Pixel phones.

The latest releases cover Google Play services, the Play Store, Android System Intelligence and supported Pixel devices. Pixel owners are getting critical security patches alongside fixes for VoIP audio, missing keyboards and incorrectly rotated photos.

The Google Play services 26.39 update, dated Oct. 5, adds a simpler setup process for Find Hub tags, including options to rename and categorize accessories and enable Left-Behind Reminders. NFC can also be used to access tag information and settings.

Google is also adding card artwork and payment network logos to card tokenization notifications in Wallet. The Play Store is getting a notable change in India: AI-generated images will now carry an AI label, with some exceptions.

Users can also see their global influence on reviews, including total views and helpfulness votes. Android System Intelligence B.29/C.7, meanwhile, receives bug fixes and maintenance changes.

Pixel devices get critical security fixes

The Pixel side of the update is more serious. Google says supported devices receiving the Oct. 5 security patch level are protected against the vulnerabilities covered in its Pixel bulletin and the October Android Security Bulletin.

The Pixel bulletin lists six additional vulnerabilities, including four affecting Pixel components. Two are rated critical in Bluetooth and GDMC, while another critical flaw affects GSA. Two kernel vulnerabilities are rated high severity.

Google encourages customers to install the update, but the rollout is happening in phases, meaning some owners may have to wait before seeing it.

Three Pixel bugs are also fixed

Google has included three notable functional fixes. Pixel 8 through Pixel 10 devices receive a fix for audio noise or distortion during certain VoIP calls, while Pixel 8 through Pixel 11 devices get a fix for the virtual keyboard occasionally failing to appear in search fields.

Pixel 11 owners also get a camera-related fix addressing photos and videos that could occasionally be saved in the wrong orientation. Pixel 6 and 7-series devices, the first Pixel Fold and the Pixel Tablet receive build CP3A.261005.002.A1, while Pixel 11 devices receive CD1A.261005.003. Pixel 8, 9 and 10 models get CP3A.261005.005.

Pixel 6 reaches a key support milestone

For Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners, this update carries extra significance. Google extended the phones’ support period to five years, putting the end of their regular support window in October 2026.

Google has not confirmed that this is the final update for the two phones, but another extension would be needed for regular monthly updates to continue beyond this point. That makes the October patch more than a routine security release for Pixel 6 owners: it could be the last scheduled stop in the phones’ software journey.

That means Pixel 6 owners should treat this month’s patch as especially important. If support ends as scheduled, future vulnerabilities may no longer receive the same routine fixes.

What Pixel owners should do

For most users, the practical takeaway is simple: installing the update is worthwhile. The release combines security patches with fixes for everyday problems such as missing keyboards, distorted VoIP audio and incorrect photo orientation.

The bigger issue is fragmentation. Google System updates do not necessarily arrive everywhere at once, and features listed in the release notes can take weeks to reach users. The same applies to the Pixel rollout, which is being phased in across devices and carriers.

Owners of Pixel 6 and 6 Pro phones should pay particular attention. If Google does not extend support again, this month’s update may be their last regular software update, making timely installation especially important.

Other news: Google is ending Android Auto support for Android 10, meaning users on older phones may need to upgrade their device or operating system to keep using the in-car platform.
