Apple’s latest iOS 27 developer beta may have revealed one of the strongest software clues yet that its first foldable iPhone is getting closer.

Developers digging through iOS 27 beta 4 discovered new Battery Health text that refers to “the batteries in this iPhone” instead of the singular wording used on current iPhones. The code also includes messages about battery health degradation and a warning when “one of the batteries” cannot be verified as a genuine Apple part.

Macworld first reported the discovery, and MacRumors confirmed the new strings are present in the beta.

No shipping iPhone currently uses multiple independently managed batteries, making the wording unusual. Existing iPhones all reference a single battery in Battery Health, even though the iPhone X used a dual-cell internal design that functioned as one battery.

Foldable iPhone is the leading explanation

The discovery lines up with months of reports suggesting Apple is preparing its first book-style foldable iPhone, widely rumored to be called the iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold.

Foldable smartphones typically split the battery into two cells — one in each half of the device — to make room for the hinge while balancing weight and maximizing available space. Previous supply chain reports and leaks have also claimed Apple’s foldable model will adopt a dual-cell battery with reported capacities of 1,921mAh and 2,962mAh, for a combined 4,883mAh.

The latest beta adds to earlier iOS 27 findings. The first developer beta contained references to fold states and hinge-angle detection, features that would be expected on a foldable device rather than a traditional smartphone.

While the new code strengthens speculation around Apple’s foldable ambitions, it does not confirm a product launch. Apple has a history of testing software support before announcing new hardware, but beta code can also reference features or devices that never reach consumers.

What it could mean for users

If the software accurately reflects Apple’s hardware plans, it could signal a more repairable battery system. The beta includes text suggesting “one of the batteries” could be replaced independently, raising the possibility that users would not need to replace an entire battery assembly if only one cell fails.
