problems with HP 4p scanner driver

By lillierose ·
I Upgraded my win 95 to 98, pc would not reconized the scanner. Thru much research I order an updated driver from HP. Received the HP Deskscan 2.9 & Copy Utility driver cdrom (53C400A). I erased all componets of the Scanjet before adding the new one. restarted the computer after adding new utility, went to device manager upgraded driver (53C416). PC continues to reject the new driver. But, the old driver will work as long as I don't turn the pc off. So the only way I can use my scanner is erased all components of the scanjet then allowing the old driver to work without turning of the computer. I hope this makes sense.

problems with HP 4p scanner driver

If I am not mistaken, this scanner uses a scsi ISA card internally--this I would check not only for IRQ conflicts, but memory address conflicts with any other ISA devices you may have installed. You may have to reformat in order for windows NOT to be confused with the prior installation--I have had to do this in the past with old HP scanners. Since you've just upgraded, it might behoove you to go ahead and start from scratch. I would install the scanner before any other hardware that isn't PnP.Let us know how it worked out for you. Best wishes.

[once again following behind Lizzy, who gave some great advice above.]

One thing about your post troubled me. you said that you erased all the old Scanjet components. I certainly hope that was shorthand for saying that your properly removed all of the older components. If you did not follow the correct uninstall procedures, you may have left some artifacts in the registry that will complicate your situation.

You also did not mention which version of Win98 you are using. I can tell you from experience that Win98ME is very persnickity about things like scaners.

so, in terms of hard advice, first do what Lizzy suggested. If that does not solve the problem, I'd look at uninstalling all of the ScanJet components, and the printer drivers (assuming you are sharing the parallel printer port) and try just installing the scanner, seeing if you can get it to work, and then installing the printers.

Try some of these things and add a comment to your original postings and we'll see what an be done to help you further.
