2003 Nt Backup ‘Unmanaged’

Currently i have named tapes and exiting data on tape. i need to do a backup daily from monday to saturday. Can unmanaged schedule do append data? Can i free the exisitng media for existing tape as it was previously under managed which i found it poses many problem like “canot locate specified media and termination of operation’. Please help
