2003 Server as Member Server

By The Young One ·
Hi everyone,
I want to do the following but am very very wary of doing it in a live environment.

I need to get a copy of our Active Directory from our Windows 2000 DC onto my Windows Server 2003 so that I can take the 2003 Server offline and redesign the AD Structure without making it a 2003 Domain.

What steps do I need to take to do this, as Technet doesn't seem to offer an A to Z solution for this method.

Ta muchly.

I suggest to:
1. Setup the new server with W2K
2. DCpromo the server in the domain.
3. Make sure AD is replicated OK
4. Take the server offline
5. Upgrade the offline server to W2K3
6. Redesign AD structure as necessary

Not A to Z, but 1 to 6

If the machine you intend to resrucuture is a DHCP server, you can install another domain controller machine in the same domain and allow the AD to replicate to this machine. Transfer/seize the operations master role from the machine you intend to take offline. Redesign your offline server. If your environment is mixed you have to transfer the PDC emulator role as well. You can get help from Microsoft Self-Paced MCSE Training Kit on 2000 Active Directory Services (Exam 70-217, Chapter 4, Implementing Active Directory).
