Locked

98 security

By ejdevjr ·
I relize that 98 is not a secure o/s BUT.
I have a client that does not want to upgrade. He has a NT W/S as a server and two 98 boxes. No problem locking down the NT box
but how can lock out the 98 machines.?

It depends on what kind of security you want to implement. Do you want to implement local security, network security, file security or some combination? If you are trying to implement file security with multiple users that can use the machine locally, obviously the VFAT does not provide for that kind of security.

If you want network security, then be sure to manage your file and print sharing carefully. Depending on your setup, you may want to consider putting your machines behind some kind of a firewall such as a packet filtering firewall which can be easily set up on Linux. Your firewall would perform IP masquerading to get services to your other computers, but I'm not sure this is conducive to your setup.

If local security isyour concern, on 98, all you can do is set up multiple users, but you have no ability to limit file or privilege access as mentioned above.

These are only ideas. To fully answer the question more details are required.

You can visit www.filefarm.com and download some free/shareware utilities that may provide some level of security. I haven't found one that would be somewhat similar to WinNT logon screen but there are some that may be somewhat equal to WinNT lockout screen.
