A Smart Soul To Help a Not-so-Smart Soul

I’m running Win98 on a Satellite 2545 CDT. When I installed the Windows Update and rebooted, Windows does load but I cannot see any of the icons or do anything with the mouse. It does ask me for my network password, but when I press enter or ESC, the screen is blank, I only see the background color. How can I fix this?
