A thought on how to combat SPAMMERS on TR

By jdclyde ·
Just a thought here, but for the first two months someone is a member, limit their posts in length.

Only give the 1/4 of the available space in a post. If they can't copy and paste their long spamming sales pitch, maybe they won't bother?

I can't see them making their membership and then coming back two months later to do their posts.

Another thing would be to have a flag on new accounts, so the TR PTB can pull a list like the "PFMC" to see only what new members are posting. This would also help identify trolls that are best pruned from the community.

What do you think?

Ruthless banning works

by Maevinn In reply to A thought on how to comba ...

From my experience on a fish forum, being ruthless in banning will work. Spammers tend to show up in crowds--once they see that there threads are removed quickly, they go elsewhere. Kind of a PITA for mods, but effective. Of course, I discovered that one reason they were coming back was that some members had decided to swamp them with email spam...Sheesh. Having members ignore them helps to.

It will have to do

by Tony Hopkinson In reply to A thought on how to comba ...

seeing as we can't just shoot the b'stards.

May be we do need moderators. Max and Deepsand, if they both black ball you must be some sort of ****.

Hmmm I've fell out with both of them on occasion....

Me, Max and Deepsand , three strikes and your out.

We could have long involved debates about it.

How about a new category thisisspam, that doesn't get included in new and hot, overrides all other tags and members of good standing having the privilege of tagging the offending posts .

TR can empty out anything over seven days old, save some space.

wouldn't it be fun to make their systems send full copies of al online activities to thier local police department?

I don't think most spammers live somewhere with good law enforcemtent

Given the grasp spammers have on the English language they live somewhere where it is not commonly used, like Nigeria or the United States.

Special button

by Zen37 In reply to A thought on how to comba ...

A special button that says "Report as Spam" which once clicked by a member takes the thread offline until a moderator inspects it. If he/she agrees, he/she takes it out, if he/she does not agree, he/she puts it back with the mention "approved by TR".

Simple enought.
