Access 2000 unable to open Network File

By IREChe ·
Running a small Workgroup comprised of 3 machines. PC1, 2 and 3. There is a small database being shared over this network. 2MB in size. The file is currently on PC2 and can be read with no problems by PC3. The problem arises when PC1 tries to access the database. If the file is opened by double clicking the file in its network folder....then the "network folder" stops responding. If you open Access on PC1 and try to open the file from there....Access stops responding.

I have found however that if the database is placed on PC1 locally then all the machines can use the database with no problems.

All the machines are running W2K Prof & Office2K Prof.

I do not know what your setup is but this is how I would do it to minimize problems and reduce network traffic at the same time:

Separate data and program into two mdbs

yourprg.mdb - user interface form
yourdata.mdb - Local copy of master data

Install the mdb on all 3 computers in a folder named yourfolder.

Create master data in any of the computer you want to assign as your master

In the interface program do the following:
1. create a function that will copy the master data to yourdata.mdb in the local drive.
2. Link the tables you need from both yourdata.mdb and masterdata.mdb
3. On programs that updates data, use tables from the masterdata.mdb.
4. For Inquiry programs and reports use tables from yourdata.mdb

Hereare the advantages of this setup:

1. You have a backup of data in all 3 computers
2. Minimize network traffic
3. You can still operate even if the network is down.

The only thing that it will cost you is disk space which is very cheap.

You could try seeing who has ownership of the file. If you need to, you can take ownership from PC1 I believe...
