Access Compacting - Duplicates Database

By d_irvine ·
I am using Office 2000. I have a small order tracking system that is about 40megs. When I run the Access Compacting feature in Access the blue indicator along the button of the program starts, goes about 1/3 of the way and stops. My tracking database opens back up to the main form page. The compacting feature creates a entire duplicate of the database on the desktop. I am running the database on a small lan network with four computers in total. Two of the computers are running Windows98 and two are running Windows XP. I recently ran the Office Update feature and upddated the program on all the work stations. Since the update I have been having this problem. I do not believe the Access Compacting is completing it job also. I have two other very small database around 2megs, and I can run the compacting feature on this two databases with no problems at all. I have tried copying the database to my computer that has not been updated, and the same issue of duplicating the database occurs when running the compacting tool. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I use this database all day long and do not want it be come corrupt. Thanks very much. Darren

Try this:

Backup this database first to another computer, then try repair before compacting. I think there is an indexing problem.

Sorry for not replying earlier, yes in office 2000 the compacting and repairing is a one process:

1- Please make sure that the drive on which you are doing the compact has enough space for another copy of the database, that is 40MB as I recall.

2- If the above is not met then you need to copy the database to a drive that contains at least 40MB and preferable more and retry the compact process; otherwise, check the permissioning you have on the database and the permissing on the driver on which the compacting is being executed. You should have open/run and open exclusive permissions.
