We are just beginning to upgrade to Windows 2000 (from W9598 and NT 4.0). We are running into massive amounts of Access/Permissions issues with Office 97, Scanner software, WordPerfect, etc… The list goes on and on. The built-in permissions in W2k is lovely, but it is a heartache as well. I do not want to give every employee POWER USER rights and/or ADMIN rights, but it seems impossible not to. For example: I can load PaperPort scanner software under an Admin account, but when a USER with simple user rights) logs on…I get an error that basically says, “The software has not been installed.” Then if I add said User to the Power Users group the software works perfectly. We have run into the same issues with MS Word 97 (Spell Grammar checkers) and had to hack the registry to repair. Is everyone else having these issues? Does anyone have some ideas on these issues? (Remember, I do NOT want Power Users or Admins on my network—I would rather keep hacking registries!). PS. Weare a large Workgroup of 250 users and will be installing two DC’s in the near future. Any help or advice is appreciated. I am sure I am not the only Admin trying to maintain control while manipulating older software to work with 2k. Thanks!
