Access & Win 2K clients

By ahall ·
I have an app developed in access97, which is distributed to win95 & win2K clients. However, on installing on win2K clients, I get an error when running the database "Function isnt available in expressions....) I have looked at MS Technet & it suggests refreshing references to comctl32.ocx. Done this, still no good...Any Ideas?

1. Office97 may not work properly on W2k.
2. A particular function used in Access 97 is not supported in latest version of the ocx.

MS is not going to support Office97 pretty soon,...either
1. run only on Win9x
2. upgrade office

Is the error message occurred when you run the program or when you open the Access database?

Thanks for the answer...however, previous releases of the app have worked fine on Win2K Clients...I just need to work out what I have done differently in this release, although "not much" is the answer!! I am using other ocx controls (such as tacompfrom Total Access etc) & these all worked fine in previous releases. I'll leave the question open to see if anyone else might know? Thanks a million, though!

The guilty is always COMCTL32.OCX file. Not only you have to refresh references to this file, but you have to verify its version number, too. You have to use the same version number you used in your develop PC, because Microsoft newest libraries arenot compatible with previous ones, so if you used a 5.01.4319 in your pc, now you have to use the same version in your clients: if clients have 6.0x.xxxx they will not work. To check your version number, find COMCTL32.OCX file, right click and select Property - Version. You can copy the file from your develop pc and replace it into your client pc.

Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 addressed a lot of those types of compatibility issues. Install SP2.

If you have SP2 installed, or after you install it you get the same error, consider this:

According to Microsoft article Q194374 titled, "ACC97: Error Message: Function Isn't Available in Expressions in Query Expression"

CAUSE:
You developed a database by using a particular version of a type library, and then upgraded the version of the type library on your development computer.

-or-

You referenced a type library on your development computer, and then moved the database to a computer that has a newer version of the type library.

NOTE : This issue often involves references to Comctl32.ocx. But this issue can also occur with other type libraries. An example of installing a newer type library version is installing newer versions of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). Sometimes the upgrade of a type library is subtle, such as when you upgrade the operating system version or install a new application.

See this link for the whole article and Microsoft's suggested resolution:

Good luck,
