Access XP crashes at query run

By miamiheat05 ·
I have Microsoft Office XP SP3 installed on a PC. It works great except for when I'm attempting to run one query in Access XP. This is a query that is based on imported data from Excel 2000. The query was also built from Access 2000 (Office XP is a new upgrade for this PC).

The query works fine from PCs running Access 2000, but causes Access XP to crash with no warning. (the application just closes completely and gives no error message)

Can anyone provide information on this problem? Is there an application log I can check? Again, other queries work fine but this query crashes the whole app. Thanks in advance for your help!

First make a copy of the database as a backup.

A possible solution, open Access and click cancel on the open database prompt. Go to tools, drop down to the Database Tools option and pick compact and repair database. Choose the database and the compact it into a new database don't overwrite the existing one. I've found compacting while the database is open and compacting into itself can cause some errors.

If there are joins are the data types compatible? Comparing numbers to text can be an issue.

Try running the query returning top 1, 5, 25, 100 records.

For a log, and I doubt it will help. Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools and Event Viewer try the application log first. The System and Security logs might have something, but that's unlikely.

Access apps run into trouble in conversion with some user written functions. I think this is unlikely but check them out.

If none of this helps go to the query in design view, select the SQL view mode, copy the SQL and post it here.
