Accessing my computer @ work from home

    Locked

    by joe ·

I have a stand alone PC that I do all my work on when at my business. What I would like to do is be able to access the files on my work computer from my house on the days that I am sick or have a day off. I have a 56k v90 modem on my work system. I need step by step on how to make the connection between the two systems. If the answer to this will not fit in the spaces allowed, please email the information to me at joep@royalnv.com

You will need to setup a VPN or a connection through RAS to the Primary server at your work.

( Ask your Network Administrator to do this for you).

Then You will need to set the client connection at your home PC which is fairly easy. you will need a password and
a user name in order to login.

Once you are Logged into the domain at work from your home then you can map the drives to your computer at work.

Let me know if you need any details on how to setup the VPN.

      Thanks

The easiest way to do that is with some software called PC Anywhere made by Symantec. The latest version is 9.2 and works very well. Check it out at http://www.symantec.com/pcanywhere/index.html You could also use built in stuff with Windows 98. That would require adding Dial up server and a lot of setup. The nice part about PC Anywhere is they provide support!! Hope this helps!!!

#2 is the best solution…. PCAnyWhere is easy to set up, works pretty fast and is pretty cheap too. I use it for remote administration of my network. I even use it to remote control my user’s desktops with Zenworks.

If you want to access your work computer and it has a Fax Modem.
      On the work computer:
      1.Double click “My Computer”.
      2.Double click “Dial Up Networking”.
3.Click on “Connections” menu >> “Dial Up Server”
      4.Choose “allow caller access”
      5.inserta pssword if you need.
      On your home computer:
      do step 1 & 2
3.Double Click make new connection and in the phone number put the work phone number and in the password field put your chosen password if found. any comments shaffei@mailandnews.com

Another Option may be to use a program called
      Serv-u from Deerfield.com
      It’s a FTP Server Program,.
Leaving the computer you want to access online with serv-u running and you will be able to access your computer from anywhere that has internet access without worrying about dialing directly to your computer.

Using PC Anywhere would probably be your best bet. You can then dial into your work PC and either transfer the files you want to use or use your work PC via your home PC. It can work the other way, too (work to home). PC Anywhere provides some security, in case this would be an issue.
