Adding 2nd CD-ROM & mounting Jazz drive

By denniswelch ·
Hi,
I just started using Linux a few weeks ago. After having lots of videor elated issues with RedHat 6.1 I decided to buy Caldera eDesktop 2.4 and it installed perfectly! The installer auto detected my primary IDE CD-ROM drive and it works great. I have a 2nd CD-ROM drive connected to the same controller as a slave and it is a burner. First of all, how do I mount this 2nd CD-ROM and then how do I get Linux to recognize it as a burner? While I'm at it, I also have a SCSI Jazz drive attached tothis machine. The drivers for my Adaptec 2940 controller are loaded automatically every time I boot Linux. The Jazz drive is id=3, how do I mount this device? Thanks!

Assuming that both units are on the 2nd IDE controller. Your CD-RW device (slave) would be /dev/hdd. To use cdrecord and it's X interfaces you need to install the 'IDE-SCSI' emulation modules.

In /etc/modules/default add the following lines.

ide-scsi

at the end of the file. In your next boot the module will be automatically inserted. To see if your CD-RW is recognized properly enter the following CLI

cdrecord -scanbus

The out put displayed would show all the SCSI and "SCSI emulated" devices the kernel recognizes. This should get you going, further read man pages on mkisofs and cdrecord.

As for the JAZZ drive, I don't have one but I'll try to answer your question. If it is SCSI then look for the device name when the system boots or as root use 'dmesg' to see the devices recognized at boot time. If it is an IDE device then most likely it is /dev/hdb, slave on the 1st IDE controller.

I have an Iomega ZIP 100 (IDE) and use the "ide-floppy" module in the above file to emulate a floppy drive.

The tip about the /dev/hdd really helped me nail down the 2nd CD burner, I got it working as a regular CD reader. Still gotta work on the burner issue though, haven't tried the suggestions. I also haven't tried the JAZZ drive stuff, it is SCSI and I KNOW the SCSI drivers are loaded at bootup, just got to figure out how to mount SCSI ID 3. I'll get there. I'll give you the points anyway. Thanks for the help!
