Adding 512MB SDRAM: freezes @ logon

By alexenjen ·
Windows 2000 computer with Intel 700+MHz cpu Via chipset
Award Modular bios v6.00PGN 12/21/2000

On bootup the memory count changed, but at logon it just freezes or a physical memory dump error appears.

I added same amount of ram to other workstations and the upgrade worked without failure.

Itried reapiring the OS on 1 workstation, it solved the problem. I tried repairing the OS on another OS with the same specs, at logon it still freezes.

Ady ideas will be greatly appreciated

1) Try different memory...

2) Ensure the FSB of the memory does not exeed the motherboard's capactiy.

3) Does it boot into safe mode? - if not, then it is a hardware issue (memory)

Swap the RAM with a stick that works in another PC, if it works, the RAM is dead. Fortunately, you are in a position where other RAM is available instead of having only one stick and not knowing if it works.

If the memory is not the same as the one already existed in the comp - you should consider changing it. If it is the only one - change it with another one and try it into another computer. If it works, I don't know what to say; if it is not working change it with a new one.
