Adding Another OS

by TheChas In reply to Adding Another OS

The simple answer is yes.

However, there are many risks and problems installing an older version of Windows on a system with XP installed.

The recommended procedure is to install the oldest OS first on the C: drive.
Then install the newer OS on a different drive.

The biggest problem you will have is getting the old version of Windows to install and not corrupt your XP installation.

Even if you install W98 onto the drive, it will replace files in the root of the C: drive that it needs to boot.

A work-around would be to add a second hard drive for W98.
Temporarily replace your primary drive (XP) with a small spare hard drive.
Install W98 onto the drive.
Copy the files from the root of the C: drive to the root of the drive.
Re-install your XP drive.

Edit boot.ini to recognize the w98 installation.
For information, check out the boot.ini reference at www.systeminternals.com
