Adding NIC to old Acer Pentium 60; Win98

By lorbecj ·
Want to use an old AcerPower desktop Pentium 60, 40bm RAM, as a web browser only. Have tried 3 different network cards (old Intel, 3Com, and new Linksys LN2000), all pass diagnostics, but can't see other PC's on network via Linksys router, have tried all combo's of protocols. Formated hard drive, installed Win98 fresh. Linksys support says go back to Win95?

Adding NIC to old Acer Pentium 60; Win98

I feel your pain, we had an Acer P75 I think. I tried unsuccessfully for many months to get it on the network wih Win95 and Win98.
Whan I called Acer there Tech Support said, quote "This computer is a home computer, not meant to be on a network"!!
And here I thought Win95 and Win98 were networking environments??

First need some clarification : You say you only want to use this for Web Browsing, and your NIC's install ok, yet you can't access the Web ???or access a network????

ok I take the share internet connection via router meaning a DSL/Cable router with a 4 port switch.

If your nic is currently installed, try running winipcfg from a command prompt [or the run box]. A window will popup indicating the Network properties. There will be a box that shows adapter. Your NIC should be listed. If not, try to release then renew. [There are radio buttons for release and renew]. Also, on your DSL/Cable router, access the web setup page and see if that computer is listed in the status page "computers accessing the gateway". You computer, if the NIC is properly configured and functioning and connected to the router should be listed.

[this is kinda basic but TCP/IP protocol has to be installed. Check and verityin NIC properties that TCP/IP is listed.

[This might simply be a problem with binding TCP/IP protocol to the NIC.]

winipcfg is a Windows 9X command line utility. If your running W2K use ipconfig.

Thanks, my router was set to 2 PC's max when I configured it last year. I set it to 3 and bingo. Ran winipcfg to help me out, it showed invalid IP addresses, then I logged on to the router and saw the DHCP setting. Thanks again!
