Adding WinNT to W2k to dual boot

By gshollingsworth ·
I have been asked to add Windows NT 4 to a system running Win2k Pro and dual boot. I understand NT 4 needs SP4 or better to access a NTFS 5 partition. I also understand that the recomended method is to install NT 4 first and to a different volume. Is it possible to install NT 4 to a NTFS 5 volume? If not, then after installing 4 with sp6a to it's own NTFS 4 volume, can I "repair" Win2k's Boot & startup to include the NT 4 as a dual boot? I would have the NTFS 4 volume follow the NTFS 5 andkeep everything under 1024 cyl. I know to use the SP4 atapi.sys during the NT 4 install. I am trying to avoid a complete reinstallation of Win2k after installing NT 4.

Going the route you are considering the only thing comes to mind is that after partitioning and installing WINNT4,trying to repair the WIN2K PRO,will allow the NTFS5 file system files to overwrite the NT4 files, when you use the repair method to WIN2K PRO,so you may have to revert to doing a clean install, after partitioning the hard drive.

NT would reside on the second partition. Win2k would always reside on the first partition. I think a Win2k repair would not touch the NT install.

If this is one volume, you're either stuck with getting out the partition magic and createing a new partition for your NT install and letting the setup format it for you or fdisking on your own and starting from scratch.

I'm not sure if it makes a difference which one is installed first. I don't beleive the boot manager that's created differs much from NT to 2000. When you install the other, the boot.ini should automatically be created for you
