Administrator Password

By michelle ·
I have a laptop that an employee set up and he doesnt remember the local admin password. Is there a way to recover this? He was trying to upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP and it began to do a physical memory dump, so I tried to start it in safe mode, but I need the admin password. Please help, we are a school and he has his students grades on this computer and he can't loose this information.

Thank you,

Michelle

Administrator Password

Is the laptop a member of your Windows domain? If so, you can log in as your domain Administrator.
If this laptop is NOT a domain member, then you need a 3rd party tool.
You can get Locksmith from Sysinternals. Go here for info:
http://www.winternals.com/products/repairandrecovery/locksmith.asp
NOTE: link also available here: http://tinyurl.com/2fm7

But, Locksmith is only sold as a part of the ERD Commander, which is $399. It is still a great thing to have.

Now, if you don't have the budget for that, there is a free method:

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/index.html

This is a product NOT made by a company, and there is no warrany or anything like this. Use this tool at your own risk!
But, this tool does work. I've used it myself.

hope this helps

This will not solve my problem only because I can't justify spending $399 for one pc. I can't risk losing the information using the second option.

Is this laptop apart of a network or a stand alone? If it's a stand along, are there other accounts created that have adminstrative rights? If not, are you able to log into Safe Mode as the user? If so, login as him in Safe Mode and replace the login.scr file with cmd.exe. When the Windows 2000 screen comes up wait until the cmd.exe executes and the set the password for the local administrator account. Reboot and login as local administrator. Hope this helps.
