Adobe Professional 8

By amclane ·
Need a plug-in that allows me to create a pdf with security options enabled (no changes allowed) BUT I do want to allow page extraction. I am having problems finding a plug-in that allows page extraction but still holds the security of no changes.

No plug-in needed

You should already have the security options in Acrobat 8. My older Acrobat Pro version 6 lists the following security options:

Printing:
Changing the Document:
Document Assembly:
Content Copying or Extraction:
Content Extraction for Accessibility:
Commenting:
Filing of form fields:
Signing:
Creation of Template Pages:

You can allow or disallow any of these options in Acrobat 6, and I'm sure you have at least these many options in Acrobat 8.

To access the Security menu:

File > Document Properties > Security

Please post back if you don't find what you need in the Security menu.

adobe tech support

Thank-you for the reply. I have set the security policy to allow copying, printing and changes for commenting, filling in form fields and signing existing sig. fields. But when you try to extract pages, it will not allow that. I called Adobe tech support, they directed me to www.planetpdf.com to find a more 'robust' security plug-in that would allow page extraction. That is why I asked the question here to avoid browsing through literally thousands of plug-ins.

Did you overlook something in Security policy?

I cannot speak with authority regarding Acrobat v. 8, but my installation of Acrobat v. 6 has a security parameter for:

Content Copying or Extraction

One can choose allow or disallow for this parameter. If you have the same (or similar) parameter in v. 8, it should be set to allow, and you should then be able to extract pages from that document.

Sometimes (once per century) I must eat crow and acknowledge error. Alas, this appears to be one of those extraordinarily rare occasions.

I actually have a book on Acrobat 8: Doug Sahlin, How to do Everything with Acrobat 8 (McGraw Hill/Osborne, 2007). The following is from Ch. 5, p. 131:

<None Disallows users with Acrobat 8.0 Standard or Professional to edit the document

<Inserting, Deleting, and Rotating of Pages Enables viewers with Acrobat 8.0 Standard or Professional to insert, delete, and rotate pages

<Filling In Of Form Fields And Signing Enables viewers with Acrobat Standard or Professional to fill in form fields and digitally sign the document. Adobe Reader 8.0 users will only be able to fill in the form fields.

<Commenting, Filling In Of Form Fields, And Signing Enables viewers with Acrobat Standard or Professional to add comments, as well as fill in form fields and digitally sign the document.

<Any Except Extracting Of Pages Enables viewers with Acrobat Standard or Professional to perform any editing with the exception of extracting pages from the PDF document.

This last is relevant to your issue. The wording is tortured, but as I read this security parameter, this is what happens:

1) Allow precludes page extraction
2) Disallow enables page extraction

If my interpretation be correct, you should have the built-in functionality of allowing page extraction while precluding virtually everything else.

Good reason for me to hang onto Acrobat 6...
