After Downloading

By llove ·
After downloading a program such as (200 ways to save your hard drive) I save it as a file. It saves it in Word, but when I open it it comes up in code not in text.
I tried to open it in Acrobat. Would not open

Not enough info there

by MattyUK In reply to After Downloading

There isn't really enough info there to give you a definative answer.

But some basic advice for you. Get to grips with these concepts (if you haven't already). For PC/Windows the file extension is all important. .TXT means text file while .JPG mean picture file format. Windows uses the extension to "associate" a program with the file. So for a .txt file it "associates" Notepad and uses NotePad to open the .txt file. If you rename a .jpg file to .txt and then open it up in Notepad you get a load of junk/code.

It could be that you have the wrong file extension on the file you have saved.

Another reason is different versions of Word. Try to open a Word 2000 document in Word 97 and you get the same junk/code. Try to identify or verify that the extension is correct for the file.

Also be aware that Windows can be set to hide the file extensions so be sure to check that out if you can't see any extensions at all. In addition you can manually alter the "associations" for file extensions to correct any problems like having .jpg's opening up in Notepad.

Final thought are you saving.downloading the target file or the web page itself? use right click and try saving the target as. web pages (.htm or .html) contain HTMLmarkup "code" when opened.

You'll pick it up I am sure.
