Another Hal.dll nightmare, Please Help!

By truth ·
I have a very old computer that has just been awesome and had very few problems until recently. I have no idea what prompted the problem but it crashed and I had to recover it about seven times in a week. The only information that continues to come up is "missing system32\hal.dll"
How can I download this file? It doesn't work when I use my recovery disks, and I am pretty sure all my problems are linked to this. Please send me some information if you can. I really need this computer.

Boot from the XP CD. Select repair and choose the Recovery Console. Follow the direction on the screen. When you get the command prompt, type expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll
* Notes: replace d: with the correct drive letter for your cd-rom

Thanks so much, but don't have XP CD

I really appreciate this advice, and it may help somehow if I can find a way to access the file from a back up disk I made, but the computer came loaded with XP, so I did not get the disks. Is there any other way to get a hold of the file? I really don't want to replace my computer, I love XP and this has worked so well, but if it keeps crashing, I suppose I will have to. It is about 10 years old, but it usually works so well. Please let me know if you have any idea how to get a hold of the file or if I could get it if someone has the XP CD. I am more than willing to just save all my files and put another version of XP on it if I have to in order to make it run correctly and then re-install the files I really want. I really appreciate your help. It is amazing how many people are having this problem. I could not believe it when I saw all the posts. Could this be why my computer crashed to begin with?
