AntiVirus for IM Users on my network

By richlasan ·
Is there an antivirus software that is proven effective in scanning instant messenger clients for viruses? The number of IM users are growing on my network, I need to protect my network. Should I consider the Corporate version of Symantec Antivirus that I currently use as sufficient?

The Symantec AV 2003 version does no work with the newest versions of MSN IM. It seems to hang everytime you try to connect it.
Since the files transmitted via IM are stored on the files system, just the File system realtime protection should protect for most transmissions MSN and Yahoo. For ICQ, you need to slap a few hands and forbid the software from being loaded on client machines.
I would also recommend that you do use the Corporate version of Symantec AV. With the corporate editionyou will not have your clients trying to do live updates everymorning when the machines are fired up. One server in your network can download the updates and pass them to the clients. The second benefit is that you can lock down the AV software tostop users from shutting down the AV software or changing the AV configuration settings.

Reason is that I have already implemented those strategies described here before posting this question on Tech Republic. Thanks for your contribution, all the same.

Check out http://akonix.com. They have a solution that allows you to completely control IM traffic on your network, and tie IM screen names to your network accounts. You can control what sort of traffic comes in or goes out, or lock it so it's internal only. It looks pretty nice, although I don't have it running on my network just yet.... no budget.
