Until you define a few more things, it will be hard to offer advice. What is your budget? Which version OS (Mac or Windows)? Is your programming graphics intensive? Is there an issue with your current laptop?

I suggest that more memory is better from your description. Memory is something you don’t want to get cheap with to ensure that your computer will keep up with your needs.

I’d go for a laptop with SSD (no HDD) and 8 GB RAM, with the option to extend it to 16 if it turns out you need that.

The need for graphics depends on how graphic and 3D your code editor and applications are.

There are no cheapest brands. There are only cheapest laptops. Don’t buy those.

I have played a lot of games for hours on my current laptop and watched movies and series for hours. So, my current laptop hangs a lot and it is very slow. It takes ages to start when i power on and hangs when I start a node.js server.

My budget is around $500 at most.

To be precise about my work project, I have not decided the proper work flow but I will use Javascript and node.js. I will makes something like this with core Javscript: aaryatables(dot).com.

Is 8 GB RAM is sufficient to develop such project and make it work smoothly? Also, do i need any GPU or graphics apart from inbuilt ones?

No, I won’t be using 3D designing or architecture softwares. I will just use Atom code editor and node.js server running on the background

I don’t think you will be happy using a $500 or less laptop. You are not buying a premium computer. I paid more for my Samsung S7+ tablet with a 12-inch display and I would never attempt to program on that device either.

So, according to you, how much is sufficient? Can you suggest 2-3 laptops?

Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga P40 This is a great laptop for programming and creating software because it comes equipped with a lot of ports like USB Type-C, Thunderbolt 3 technology, HDMI connectivity, RJ45 Ethernet, and more. It’s also lighter than some other laptops on the market that have similar specifications, which makes it a great companion while you’re working on the road.

I am currently using a Dell XPS 15 and it’s great for programming. The only thing I don’t like about it is the keyboard, but that’s just me. It has a Numpad which I use for my code editor and some other things, so it works out fine.

It is very important that the laptop has:
      1) A good processor
      2) Good RAM
      3) Good hard drive
      4) Good graphics card
      5) Great battery life
      6) Lightweight
      7) Runs windows 8 or 10 I don’t need any of these things, but they are nice to have.

There are many different laptops available for programming. The best ones will be the ones that fit your needs and budget. Here is a list of some popular laptops used by programmers:

Lenovo Y700 (Amazon link) – This laptop has an excellent keyboard, screen and battery life. It also comes with a 256GB SSD which makes it ideal for programming. It costs around $1000 but you can get it on sale often at Amazon and other retailers.

If you are looking to save money, this is probably the best option for you as well as having the most features out of all of them listed here!
