Anyone Break Into IT Mid-Career Without a Degree?

    by ellanavarro578 ·

    Hey everyone,
I’m in my early 30s and exploring a career change into IT—looking at roles like Linux system admin or cloud support. I don’t have a tech degree, but I came across a training program called Yellow Tail Tech that focuses on Linux and AWS skills.

Has anyone here actually gone through their program or know someone who has? I’m curious how it stacks up in terms of real-world prep and job placement. I’ve done some self-study, but I’m looking for something more structured and career-focused.

Would love to hear your experiences or thoughts!

Not very likely without a degree in the field. Some individuals might have better luck if they can prove prior experience in that field and real world examples of that use. I had my first personal computer in 1977, a minor degree in Information Systems from an accredited college in 1990 but had no luck finding a job back then. Some very talented individuals may have more luck than myself, but don’t count on such a position without a related degree. Then again, sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know.

Yes, many people break into IT mid-career without a degree—and it’s more common today than ever before. The tech industry often values skills, certifications, and hands-on experience over formal education.

Many students seem to say it’s helpful because it offers live classes, hands-on practice, and career support like resume help and interview prep. It does cost quite a bit, but some feel it’s worth it for the structure and guidance. You’ll still need to work hard and stay committed.
Secondly if you learn better with a clear plan and support, it could be a good option.
