AOL Cannot Connect

By merlinscastle17 ·
Can someone please help me with a very large problem I am having with AOL. I have windows 2000, over the past 4 months I have uninstalled and reinstalled AOL numerous times. I can log on to AOL but when it goes into dialing the nubmers for connection, I keep getting AOL cannot establish a connection. I have checked my modem, phone lines, ran a disk scan, deleted unused files, ran a virus scan and a defrag. It would take 6 dial up numbers before it would connect, if it connected at all. I have been reinstalling version 8.0 because 9.0 will not let me connect at all. When I got my phone bill apparently it is connecting to the number but disconnects before it goes through. I had over 200 phone calls on my bill all to the AOL dial up numbers. At this point I am not sure where the problem lies, with my computer or with AOL.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?
Thanks so much,
Rose

i would guess the modem driver is wrong or maybe you are call a v.90 dial up number but do not have a v.90 modem...can you try another modem? an external one if you can. you sure you have the right modem driver configured in aol location? what happens if you try generic driver. when did this problem crop up? after an aol upgrade or spontaneously.

if i were tshooting this i would configure another dialup isp account on it and see if that works. if that worked, points the finger pretty squarely at aol modem driver and/or setup strings. if this croppped up after aol upgrde, that fits...
if you can't configure second non-aol dial up for a test, i would then try to rule out spyware or viruii as broad spectrum approach...

guess i would also be on eht phone with isp (not aol but the one aol uses to get you to their portal) to make sure they are not having any problems on their end...

i just ran into this one on a server with aol 8 (for gawd's sake!). wouldn't connect no matter how many of my brilliant ideas i tried. so i upgraded it to aol9 (f.g.s!) since i was without further ideas and had to do something for my 70 an hour...besides scratch head...and got a better error: no dns server found. so, sure 'nuf, as it was a server with a static lan address on a network with no internal dns server, it didn't have anything in it's dns tcpip settings under dns servers. i put in a dns server ip address and bob's your uncle, we got connected...
which just goes to show me: always start by pinging the dns server...

btw, this pc dialing up or on broadband. is that what changed, i wonder...if broadband (ie. dsl, cable), what version aol? check modem driver in location. check login script (try home network) and conneftion type (try home network). if either place does not offer you home network, try latest version of aol, if no you, call aol support.

Start with whoever you are dialing into. Tell them what's going on and see if they have a solution first before making alot of changes. If the problem is on their end all the changes you make won't matter.

Cheers.
