New FOSS App Idea: “Ghost Mode Camera” — Ethical Spy Tool or Just Creative Privacy?

    Hey F-Droid community! 👋

I’ve been thinking about an app idea and would love to hear your thoughts — both technical and ethical.

What if there was a fully open-source app called “Ghost Mode Camera” that:

Takes stealthy pictures or videos without displaying a preview or interface.

Works even when the screen is off or appears locked.

Automatically saves media to an encrypted, hidden folder.

Has triggers like volume button, shake, or even proximity sensor activation.

    The Goal?
    Imagine using it for:

Whistleblowing or evidence collection without drawing attention.

Recording wildlife naturally without disturbing the environment.

Quick street photography in places where people react aggressively to cameras.

    But… 😅

Is this empowering privacy or encouraging misuse?
Should F-Droid even host an app like this if someone made it? If open-source, isn’t transparency enough? Or does intent matter?

Also: how would you technically implement this within Android’s limitations post-Android 10?

Looking forward to your views. Let’s talk ethics, privacy, and the limits of FOSS!

I won’t get into what may stop you etc. But why not write it and learn what issues there are first hand?

If the police have to obtain a search warrant to do this, why would a private individual get a free pass to do so secretly? There has to be some justification and possible consequence for doing so without the knowledge of the other party.

        Also we have tools like:
“NSO Group Technologies (NSO standing for Niv, Shalev and Omri, the names of the company’s founders) is an Israeli cyber-intelligence firm primarily known for its proprietary spyware Pegasus, which is capable of remote zero-click surveillance of smartphones.” More at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSO_Group

Given the loss of privacy today, it may be best to keep what you don’t want in the hands of others off the internet and smartphones.
