App software

By wingrob ·
As I understand, XP will require the "custom install," whereas all application software will need to be re-installed. Take MS Office, for example. Will I be told that me "key" is already in use when I try to register this product after loading it on Windows 7?

Anybody know for sure?

Thanks,
Rob

I think, but don't positively know in such a case,

that you cannot have more than one installation of the Office (or most other single-license) software.

Of this, I can't even make sense:
"As I understand, XP will require the "custom install," whereas all application software will need to be re-installed."

You need to tell us what you are doing, then we can start further guesswork. Are you installing Win & over XP, dual-booting, or what?

You can always do a default install, full install, or custom.

All application software may need to be installed at some point, if it uses an installer.

Sorry. Meant to say that a custom install is required when upgrading from XP to Win 7.

Ah, OK.

Since there is no direct upgrade path from XP to 7, you may have to reinstall some things. Make sure you back up all of your documents, as those do not transfer automatically.

But if you do need to reinstall Office, just put in your key if asked.

The best way to accomplish this may be to back everything up, wipe the drive, do a clean install of 7, then copy your documents back over and install the software you want. That will avoid any weird problems. But it can be done.
