Archiving data

We run backups "regularly."
A:What is the strategy used in other organisations about backing up:
1.Desktop applications
3.Draft document

B: How long is the backup kept?
1. Desktop applications
2. E-Mail
3. Draft documents

C: If the organisation is one that does major investigations and a "case" is continuing, but an email is stored as a document against that case then how is this backed up?

These are some of the frustrations I have?
Can someone help.

PS: We have just started implementing an EDMS but in a small pilot area.

At my last company.

A) 1. We did not back up desktop applications.
2. Email servers were backed up nightly
3. Documents keep in the network file server where backed up nightly, if you kept a document on your PC it did not get backed up unless YOU made arrangements for that to happen.

B) 1. None exists
2. I think the oldest would be year. Not sure.
3. File servers went back a year.

C) Emails sitting on the server are backed up normally. No need to worry about a case per se. Unless there is some tie in. Not sure what you mean.

I would really appreciate some responses as I would like to know what other organisations do????
