Are Alerts on the fritz again?
Lockedby deepsand · about 13 years, 1 month ago
Since 08 APR, when I received a consolidated alert e-mail for 07 APR activity, nothing.
Should I expect to shortly have yet another humongous missive show up?

There is not anything of interest aside from all this.
Or, do you attend with your left hand?

Reliable alerts on all discussions to which I’m subscribed would be wonderful. Even back when it was “working”, though, it wasn’t entirely working as evidenced by the occasional alert dump that contained many links to the distant past.

I really do miss the Alerts – that feature was always something I always really liked about TR. Of course, I could live without them, but I would be cool if we could find out whether or not there is any intent on bringing them back. 😀
I always thought the Alerts were of particular use for the Q&A forum, where the thread could fall entirely off the radar, and you’d never know it was still active, unless you bookmark every one and check them a lot.

Even with Alerts activity on old threads can still be missed.

It’s been the case for several years now that one’s subscription to a thread could be mysteriously changed to “unsubscribed.”
To the best of my knowledge, the cause has never been identified by TR, and, consequently, not fixed.

I’ve had dumps, from when alerts were apparently working, which covered large swaths of history. Of course, I’ve no idea what there might have been that never even made it into the sudden alert dumps.
I hadn’t know that a subscription could mysteriously reverse itself. Interesting.
The other thing about not getting alerts, for me, has had an opposing consequence: I’ve had to go and unsubscribe several hundred old threads, one at a time (!), as it wouldn’t occur to me when I did not get any. If I remember correctly, the unsubscribe function was updated so one could modify multiple entries at once, but it may have been a dream. I won’t check on it, as I’m tired of “updating” my information every time I’m required to log in to do any management function.

Can unsubscribe to multiple threads in one fell swoop.

However, as of the last time I looked, still no way to set your own default preferences, or do mass edits of such.
Like you, I’ve grown so weary of spending so much time managing my subscriptions with such a FUBAR system that I’ve stopped trying.

…there is another thread http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=102&threadID=307273&messageID=3059536 that everyone is exclaiming about getting a weeks worth of alerts at one time – so Yes!

using TR’s search feature. Completely gave up on it after the latest revamp.
At which point it got even less useful than it already wasn’t. -

The one we had in 2000 wasn’t the greatest, but was the best since then.

Why, back then we could even search a directory of members via a number of keys.
It seems that, with every new roll out, the Search function has been rendered less useful, to the point where it’s now effectively neutered.

Google’s site search – but that hadn’t archived yet, so it didn’t find me anything either.
One of my all time favorites that I LOVE and APPRECIATE (I place them in caps to how grateful I am) is when I get a spam alert to grab my attention.
I can never say Thank you enough for all the eyes on here.

Shouldn’t take too long to set up a bunch of new accounts; free e-mail accounts are available aplenty for the taking.
