Are ethics worth more than your job?

I was recently laid off (fired) from my job as Sr. NetAdmin at a small company. I felt my Director of IT should be honest. Call me silly. One examply - she hired her roommate as a Systems Analyist at $70 per hour, contract basis, for 15 months. Many knew the truth, but she denied it. When other lies were obvious, she outright denied them.

Maybe my mistake was that I could not let her put forth obvious dishonesty in front of others, without correcting her. If my boss is not honest, thenmust play along and be part of the dishonesty to keep my job? I felt I could not maintain my integrity and keep quite, when the obvious dishonesty flowed freely. I was fired.

Has anyone else been in this situation? Would you have let your ITDirector be dishonest without speaking up? Also, is it dishonest to hire your roommate under your direct command, with high pay, and then have this employee pick up your children from school? Any feedback would nice to hear. Regardless of what your boss is doing, or saying wrong, NEVER embarrass them by correcting it in public.

The ONLY exception is when you are in a meeting and a decision is about to be made based on in-correct information.
Even then, if possible, get a note passed, or whisper in your bosses ear.

You can talk with them in private, or if they are not responsive, work through channels for any problem.

It is possible to maintain your integrity and survive office politics if you can be discrete.

When you call your boss on ANY error in public, you begin to set yourself up as the one to take the fall.

You have to do what you think is best to keep your reputation clean. I have left jobs for ethical reasons, and also refused work for ethical reasons. Those who know me know that they can trust my work, so even my enemies often give me work.

With a situation where you are dealing with an unethical co-worker or boss, you should bring the concerns to the attention of the next higher level of management above the unethical person. BUT do it with evidence that will stand up, not just observations. With the room mate, if the person had the qualifications and was doing the work, that is acceptable (not the best but acceptable); if it was their lover then it is not acceptable (roomy and lover is NOT automatically the same thing). If it was a clear rip off then you need to get evidence of the residential address and evidence of the lack of qualifications etc.

If you dont have the evidence you should have a quiet word with the next level of management on the basis of 'this appears to be abit out of kilter, you may want to check it out just in case it bites us on the foot'. Then let them get the evidence or deal with as they think fit.

What was the exact reason stated for termination? If it was due to your mouth, ....well you could prove that you were wrongly dismissed/abuse of power if what you say is true vs. a mistake that she capitolized on to get rid of you. In all companies it's not allowed to be management and employ significant other (conflict of interest)let alone paying them to run personal errands on company time outside the job requirements. In all businesses there will be the wink wink job referral ( I got this job due to my friends dad, and I get all kinds of discrimination from others, but I get no special privledges, only a chance to break into the field), its usually about who you know. I think it's ok to employ that way as long as your not in direct contact with the individual that could bring about nepotizm or unfair business practices or discrimination. As long as the employed performs the duties required so what. This is one of those touchy subjects that swings both ways. However I dont think that any management should share a domicile with its employee only other management.

THis company should seriously look at this woman. She is in direct conflict here. You cannot pay your bills by overpaying your roomate that is outright illegal!!! YOu should sue for wrongful termination and then sue for defamation of character then you should sue because they didn't give you enough money in the first place, then you should sue because her ugly *** kids get to ride in her roomates brand new porsche that she got after her new job came through!!!! Well maybe not all that but I bet you could play hardball and get your job back at least. The question is do you really want to work in this place where such a blind eye resides? that to me is not worth it.

1. Find out the company's policy on vendor selection, ethics, and bidding.
2. Track down the Consultant's address in public records, should be on record with licensing and name registration.
3. Track down Manager's address through phone book or like means.
4. Create a great Powerpoint presentation with this information.
5. Email to CIO / CEO / C*.*
6. CC to prominent shareholders / owners
7. call your friends within the company for the play by play on the results of your fine work.

Just a little over the top

Firstly I think your better off out of there! Secondly what whoever said kep it private!!! In all my working life I have never dicpilined one of my workers in public and I never will. Firstly it is embarasing to the person concerned it is bad enoughthat they made a mistake in the first place however you do not need to let everybody know. From my experience any person I have had to repermand has always gone around and told everybody else and normally in a very short time they have also been kicking themselves in the arse for their mistake you are always your hardest person to please. Don't even entain the idea of sueing for wrongfull dismissial as this will give you a bad name in the industry. Think of yourself as an employer would you hire someone you think will sue you? So my advice to you is Forget it is no longer your problem and get on with your life. Aslo at any future job interviews don't make a big deal about leaving the previous company people {and here I am speaking as one} who interview do not want trouble makers on their payrole as they cause problems which your imediate managment and even senior managment certianly don't want. Keep this in mind I just might have been wrong as nobody is ever perfect and even if you where in the right you handled the situation in the wrong way it is called people skills. Don't get me wrong I am not siding with your previous boss I am just telling you how best to get another job!

I would have to agree that this suggestion may be a bit over the top. On the other hand, it would be quite fun.

In all honesty, it is never a good idea to correct a problem in public. That goes for employers as well as employees. Tact can go along way in resolving issues. When tact fails, and when sufficient proof of the problem is available, then take the problem to the next level. If done correctly, one of two things will happen.
1) The problem will be resolved, and you will still have the respect of your superiors.
2) The problem will not be resolved, but you will not be seen as a troublemaker.
Obviously the first option would be the best, but the second is more likely. If the second happens, be prepared to move on.

Of course my view on this may be a little off. I think I have been in government jobs a little too long.

You are correct as every place I have ever worked has its own politics which you have to either try to fit in with without stepping on anyones toes or if your like me just ignore the whole thing and get on with your job you might not be liked but atleast you get respect if only for not taking sides. Anyway I have now got too old to even want to do any Government work as I have found public servants never make a decission when they can pass it up the ladder after all who wants to take responsibility for a mistake if it can be avoided. However I am very biased particuarly today as for the last 4 months I have trying to be very nice and solve a problem with a Government department our power supplier who blew up one of my monitors it was the only one not running though a UPS and that was because I could not find a UPS that was big enough to actuaslly start the thing after all 21" monitors require a lot of juice to start them. Anyway today I probably whent a bit too far as I suggested that the power distrubition network was an obvious target for terrisots so now I am using a very big stick and bashing them over the head with it. I have or will very soon be instigating court action against them but not for what they think I will be itis going to the highest court in the land claiming they have breached their duty of care in providing a substandard, poorly maintained and actually dangerious power distribution network that could deny the necesaties of life. A very serious charge and one that will attract a lot of media coverage. And I don't really care about the monitor any more thay have now really pissed me off so they are wearing the concquences. I bet once the papers are served they will be only too willing to settle out of court but I'm no longer interested I want them to get up there and admit they have a very real problem.
