As previously mentioned downloading from a Trusted Source is paramount and should be your first line of defense.
But if you still want to be extra sure – Malwarebytes has a version that can scan apk files for viruses. (Just do an online search with Malwarebytes apk)
Malwarebytes has free versions as well as premium paid versions, I have used the free versions successfully for some time now. (the free version can scan all what you have on your systems, the paid version offers live blocking of malware or other questionable files or web sites)
There are versions for your phone and for your PC.

I just remembered occasionally reading articles about malicious apps getting on Googleplay, so it would be good to run a malware checking software after downloading from Googleplay just to be sure.
I just did a search using the words:
googleplay malware
One search result from ZDnet had the title:
“Android malware: A million people downloaded these malicious …”
other search results from various sites include titles:
“Malware on the Google Play store leads to harmful phishing sites”
“Fleckpe Android Malware Sneaks onto Google Play Store with Over …”
“Android malware infiltrates 60 Google Play apps with 100M installs”
and there are other results, do a search and see for yourself.
