Are MS Certifications really not worth getting?

by jsfald . Updated 22 years ago

After reading a featured discussion about choosing between MCAD and MCSE I got the feeling that getting a MCSE is not the best option in a pursuit of an IT carrer. Is that really true?

I graduated from a major university last year in Inforamtion Technology and I was lucky enough to find a job with a small company. It is small enough and young enough that I have no room for advancement or major salary increase is the foreseeable future, especially since my boss is only three years older than me and was with the company since it started. So, I have been working on getting certifications so my knowledge will be recongnized by future employers. I currently have Linux+ and will have A+ within a month or two. I then planned on working on MCSE certification but reading the previous discussion has me discouraged. If I want a career in IT, is it worth it to get my MCSE?

I am at the beginning of my career with an IT background in both system administration and web development that could take me in any direction. Please help me decide if I should change my career path now or continue towards a MCSE certification.
