auto numbering

by jmcorn01 In reply to auto numbering

Auto Numbering means exactly that- the software will automatically provide numbering BUT it remembers the numbers that have already been used and will not use them again even if you want it to. So, if the last 2 entries are numbered 17 and 18 respectively and you delete number 18, you cannot reuse 18. The next auto number will be 19 and there is no way around it. If you just want the next 10 consecutive numbers, auto number will work just fine so long as you create all 10 records without stopping. If you stop, it may be possible for another transaction to take over and grab one of the 10 numbers you want. The only way to guarantee that you get the numbers you want is to provide the numbers yourself in programming.
