Automatic hyperlink insertion in Excel

I’m using an Office 2000 version of Excel. When typing an entry into a cell that has the form ‘xxxxxxx@xxx’ Excel automatically formats the cell as a hyperlink and inserts the “address” as a mailto in the hyperlink. How do I prevent auto-hyperlink insertion in excel?
