After I have installed Windows XP security updates, the "Automatic Updates" option in Control Panel is not responding after I double click on it.

You might want to give SFC a try. Inset the Windows XP cd and bypass the autorun screen. Open your commend prompt (Start>run>cmd) and type sfc /scannow

It'll take a few minutes and you may be prompted along the way to replace certain files. Just have them replaced and then restart the machine. See if that helps. You could also try and use Windows Update from within Internet Explorer. Click Tools>Windows Update.

If all else fails, install service pack 2 if you haven't already.
