Automatic Updates Service Will Not Start

    Locked

    by mark ‘techtank’ tank ·

While trying to start the Automatic Updates service using:

    Net Start “Automatic Updates”

    *******************************
I get an error in Event Viewer:

    ID: 7023
    Source: Service Control Manager
    Symbolic Name: EVENT_SERVICE_EXIT_FAILED
Message: The %1 service terminated with the following error: %2

    ******************************
    Querying the service displays:

    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\CrashTDummy>sc query “Automatic Updates”
    [SC] EnumQueryServicesStatus:OpenService FAILED 1060:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

Does anybody know what this error means or how to resolve it please?

    Thank you for your time.

    Mark.

sounds like malware stopping the service from running. Fake AV sometimes do this. Have scanned for virus or recently “cleaned” a virus?

You should try to post questions like this in the help forums.

        Hi XnavyDK,

Ah sorry, wrong place to post I guess, but we are having some issues with a virus at the moment and thought it might have been related.

Thank you for the guidance and help.

        Mark.

You are correct tho, this forum does not have the mark helpful doodad. the ask a question one does tho. No big deal anyway, im not here for the thumbs I have two already and that’s enough, really, I just have two.

Anyways, I thought specifically which fake av might have stopped auto update service and I think it was the antivirus XP. Good Luck!
