AVG 6.0 Free Edition

I've been trying for 3 days now to update my virus checker. I've used my usual method, that being using drop down menu to select version and then manually starting the update. Is anyone else having this problem? Also, there are .bin files available. Are you supposed to update with these. If so, it will take a lot longer to update this way, than the way I've used for years

Never had a problem with AVG

The only time I've seen that happen is when it simply closes and won't stay open due to a virus.

I just let auto update check every three days and it works fine.

My current virus signatre is dated March 2/04

You might want to try removing rebooting and reinstalling again, it mat have had files overwritten or disassociated somewhere along the line.

Update AVG free edition

Your best bet is to actually update your version of avg as the automatic update or even the manual update through the software should be able to connect and retrieve updates, if it can't then automatic update support has probabaly been halted for the specific version you have, resulting in manually updating the signature files.
AVG free edition is actually up to v6.6 now and being free there isnt much you can do with an older version if this is the case, except manually download the updates.
I use AVG at home and constantly check for program and virus updates through the internet and signature updates through the manual update in the software.

Might be my internet connection

I live in a semi remote rural location and my connection to the internet leaves alot to be desired ( dialup connection speed 24.6 Kbps and maximum file transfer rate of 2.9 KBps ). I have run into this type of problem twice before, but never for such a length of time. Previously, it was only for a day or so and was during a time of heightend virus awareness.

After I close the update manager, I get a window stating that a connection to the internet could not be established. Open your browser to manually establish a connection.

I have already tried installing a more recent version. I am unable to download it for the same reason.

There is nothing wrong with my internet connection as per se. The functionality of other websites is still the same.

I could really use highspeed internet access, but the cost is prohibitive !!

That's probably what's happening

Because right at the moment I've seen a few warning from Symantec and the like about a new virus being out there that is ratted fairly high on their score card.

So it could be that everyone is attempting to download the latest updates or even the site has been infected but more likely you are expressing a sought of DoS as there are so many people attempting to download the latest updates and with the speed of you're connection you are being dropped by their server as an invalid attempt to download their product owing to a lack of available bandwidth.

Incidental at least once a day for the last 5 days I've seen auto updates from Norton's being delivered on various computers which run Norton's so while I don't know how busy AVG is this is probably what is happening.

OK just had sam problem with MY v6

WOW, use it for years no problem, as soon as I respond to a question, I start getting the same issues.

I noticed 2 minutes ago, that my update was sitting idle and not showing the update progress. I simply minimized it and went on with other work. A few minutes later, the update was received fine still with no indication in the Updater panel. It just ran the update and was fine.

This MAY just be a GUI issue, try letting it sit and ee what happens, chances are it will work even though it doesn't appear to be connecting.

Its no longer just me

I have been unable to update from 4 different pc's now. A tech from another area, still out here in the sticks, has reported the same thing.

I think Col Luck has hit the nail on the head. Can't really complain as this is only the third time it has happened in a good 2 years.
