Background Color won’t show in cells

I have a computer where excel does not show a change of background color for a cell except in print preview and on paper. when you make the background (shading) change to a cell or range no change is apparent. The change is visible in print preview and on paper. but not while editing the sheet. what settings do I need to change to make this work?
