Backup and restore problem

Over the past few years we have backed up our data on the sever using Veritas backup Exec.
But recently the sever we used was damaged beyond repair while we were moving premises.
Is there a way I can restore some date from the tapes using another backup/restore program.
Is it possible to reinstall Backup exec on a new computer and restore from there or is the date lost .

Any help would be greatly appreciated
