Backup Exec scheduled job causes crash

By getclyde ·
I have 2 clients with a similar problem. Both have newly installed Backup Exec 9.1. One is NT 4.0 Server the other is Win2003 SBS. Both systems crash during the execution of a scheduled backup job. They use different new backup drives ( one Sony DAT the other Seagate Travan) The crash may well be similar to a crowbarred power supply in symptom. There is no event log entry to associate to in either. The after the fact Event entry indicates a time the system crashed which can be manually correlated with the Backup Exec job detail log. Does anyone know exactly what will cure this?

You said the server crashes, but does it blue screen? Just freeze up? Reboot?

Did you call Veritas support or look in their knowledgebase?

'Crash' in both cases the server usually has a power light on, but no display or running functionality. A full shutdown and restart is required. While I could call Veritas, they charge for any help, even installation problems.

How are the tapes connected? Do they have their own controller?
If you try to run a tape on a controller for the RAId it will crash as that controller is running fast trying to keep up with the drives.

I had similar problem with BE 8.6, NT4.0 Server and HP Surestore 718. I finally determined the crash occured on the same file each time by looking info on the restore tab. The file was a very large data file. I copied the file to another directory and then back. The file grew 6 bytes in size and I never had another crash. BE didn't like something about the original file format and locked the system cold with no error info anywhere.

No answer, but a similar problem. Both the server running BE9.1 and the server that crashes are W2003. Crash was once/week, now every day. Server goes down when BE reaches it, backs up some files, then log stops until 'after the fact' entry, which is 1-2 hours later. Meanwhile the BE job quits, not moving on to next server.

I have the same problem with Veritas backup exec 9.1 running on a Dell Poweredge server with a dell tapebackup. It crashes once a week when running the differential backup. All other backups on the same machine do not have this problem. It appears the differentail begins but nothing is written to the tape and then the computer crashes and restarts itself. Hope someone has a solution to this problem.
