I recently inherited a somewhat mess of a network. I am the new network admin and need to get things under control. We have some 3 dozen servers and probably a half dozen users. We are basically a software sales and consutation company. My first order of business is to get some sort of backup plan. We have no backup software except that which is supplied with Windows and 3 small IDE tape drives on various machines. What I would like to do is build a backup ‘server’. Basically a modest machine with a redundant, reliable storage system. i.e. 3 15Gb SCSI drives configured RAID 5. Then use the Windows backup utility to create different backups nightly to this machine. Is this a ridiculous idea?
