Best Approach for Migrating from Windows 10 to Windows 11 in a Business

    Hi everyone,
I’m planning to migrate several business machines from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and would appreciate some advice on best practices. The systems are used heavily for accounting, inventory management, and project tracking in a construction-related business, so it’s crucial that the upgrade is as smooth as possible.

Are there any specific compatibility issues I should be aware of, especially regarding legacy software?
What steps can I take to minimize downtime during the upgrade?
Are there any recommended tools or processes for making the transition easier?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

The most important thing is to backup what you don’t want to lose, first. Most folks don’t have any difficulty upgrading their computer, but precautions are recommended, especially with a business computer.

Since you mentioned that you want to convert multiple computers, don’t attempt to do them all at the same time. Upgrade a few at a time in case one or more don’t upgrade correctly.

Converting from Windows 10 to 11 should work with the already installed applications but check with the software manufacturer/developer to confirm compatibility.

This is how the company I worked for did it.

They gave everyone a laptop with Windows 11 and all software they needed installed and told them to logon into the company network. The old laptop, if still good enough, was given the new image and was given to somebody else.
Of course, the service disk did a rigorous test if all software was compatible. Usually, business software is, if it’s a current version.

For those employees who didn’t use Windows 11 on their home PC, a small course on new features and new looks was given.

Theyworked just as fine on thei new laptop as when they had to use another laptop temporarily when their “own” laptop is in maintenance at the service desk. All their data is on the company servers (including Active Directory) or the cloud, so they could do everything they used to do after just logging in.

We used laptops so we would issue the user a W11 laptop and take in the old laptop. Just like Kees noted we would update in the back office if possible.
